Typhoon Dujuan has resulted in seven fatalities and five missing persons in Japan after sweeping through the greater Tokyo area. The storm, which passed along the Pacific coast, triggered widespread landslides and severe flooding. According to reports, electricity was temporarily cut off for approximately 58,000 households in Chiba prefecture early on Tuesday. The typhoon, arriving during the 'Silver Week' holidays, forced the early closure of one of the world's largest video game trade fairs in Tokyo. By Tuesday morning, the storm had moved into the Pacific, and the Japanese weather agency subsequently downgraded it. Japan frequently faces strong typhoons during late summer and early autumn. Other weather systems this season have already disrupted events at the Asian Games. Search and rescue operations are currently underway for those missing following the torrential rainfall. Oshima island, located 120 kilometers south of central Tokyo, recorded 832 millimeters of precipitation over 48 hours, which is more than double its average for the entire month of September. Similarly, Tokyo's Edogawa Ward experienced a record 282.5 millimeters of rainfall within a 24-hour period. Scientists emphasize that human-induced climate change is intensifying the risks associated with such heavy precipitation. Because a warmer atmosphere possesses a higher capacity to hold water, the severity of these storms is likely to increase.
