Iran and U.S. remain at odds as potential negotiations loom

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated on Sunday that Tehran maintains readiness for both continued military engagement and fresh diplomatic dialogue with Washington. He emphasized that the ultimate decision regarding the seven-month conflict rests with President Trump. Recently, the American President suggested that discussions might resume this week, insisting that the Iranian leadership is desperate for a peace agreement because the country is currently suffering significant losses.

Tensions persist despite earlier attempts to de-escalate. Last week, Iran submitted a proposal for a one-week ceasefire alongside plans to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. These terms were strictly dependent on adherence to a mid-June agreement that had previously collapsed. However, President Trump formally dismissed this offer, and Iranian officials have confirmed they will not adjust their requirements.

Meanwhile, Iranian state media released a message attributed to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei during the nation's Sacred Defense Week. He asserted that American military units would soon be forced to withdraw from the Arabian Sea following previous setbacks. The leadership continues to praise Iranian forces, despite widespread reports suggesting the Supreme Leader has not appeared in public since the conflict began in late February.

Economic pressure is also mounting as the Iranian rial hit a record low this week, trading at over 2.4 million per dollar. With annual inflation reaching 61.4% in August and food prices soaring, the country faces severe disruption to foreign trade. Despite the President’s optimism regarding new talks, Iranian representatives at the United Nations have explicitly denied any intention to hold direct meetings with the United States. Furthermore, British authorities have detained five individuals near an air base utilized by American forces, investigating potential connections to a terrorist plot against the facility.
