Members of Parliament have raised urgent concerns about the future of thousands of students if struggling universities fail financially. It is estimated that at least six institutions across the UK face severe financial difficulties, potentially forcing closures within the next two years.

The House of Commons Education Committee warned that the current funding model for higher education is MPs argued that universities have been forced to rely heavily on international student fees, leaving them vulnerable when enrollment numbers decline.

"It is believed that the government must act immediately to prevent institutional collapse," said committee chair Robert Halfon. "Students deserve protection and certainty about their educational futures."

It is projected that approximately 100,000 students could be affected if these institutions are forced to their operations. The legislation currently governing university closures is considered inadequate by parliamentary experts, who claim it fails to protect enrolled students sufficiently.

Universities have been required to submit financial forecasts to the Office for Students, a regulatory body. However, it is alleged that the oversight mechanism lacks sufficient enforcement powers to prevent crises before they occur.

The executive branch has been urged to establish a student protection fund and strengthen the regulatory framework. MPs recommend that the government existing legislation to create clearer procedures for institutional failure and student compensation.

It is acknowledged that universities face genuine challenges, including rising operational costs and declining domestic enrollment. Nevertheless, experts contend that strategic intervention now could prevent widespread disruption to thousands of young people pursuing higher education.

The committee is expected to present formal recommendations to parliament within the coming weeks.
