Structure:

en + participe présent (gérondif) vs participe présent seul

Only the gerund (with en) is invariable and always links to the main-clause subject; the bare present participle can be used as an adjective or in a participial clause.

Example:

En lisant ce livre, j'ai appris beaucoup. / Lisant ce livre, il prit des notes. **Translation:** While reading this book, I learned a lot. / Reading this book, he took notes.
