Reported speech: tense backshift

Structure:

said + that + preterite / past perfect (shifted back one tense)

In Norwegian reported speech, tense backshifts similarly to English: present → preterite.

Example:

Han sa at han var trøtt. **Translation:** He said that he was tired.
