Journalism in crisis: Industry leaders urge collaboration

More than 1,000 news organizations worldwide have pledged their support for World News Day, an initiative designed to bolster the credibility of journalism during a period of acute industry instability. Organizers have characterized the current climate as an existential threat, necessitating a unified response from media entities. Prominent outlets, including the New York Times and Reuters, are sharing content to highlight the essential value of trusted journalism. According to the Reuters Institute’s 2026 Digital News Report, public trust in news has reached a nadir, largely driven by the public’s migration toward social media and AI-driven platforms. Branko Brkic, a co-founder of World News Day, asserts that traditional rivals must transcend past competition to survive. He warns that if organizations fail to adapt, they will inevitably face obsolescence. Since its inception in 2018, World News Day has consistently advocated for the importance of rigorous reporting. The recent Reuters report describes a public atmosphere of cynicism and disengagement, yet it also identifies a lingering openness to high-quality news. Although social media and video networks have surpassed traditional websites as primary news sources, they are perceived as less reliable. Furthermore, the UK regulator Ofcom has observed that while audiences now access a broader range of sources, traditional providers remain the benchmark for accuracy and impartiality. Brkic, who established the Daily Maverick, contends that the media landscape has undergone a permanent shift. He argues that established entities must forge a new equilibrium by consolidating their efforts. He cautions that fragmented, individual players are vulnerable to being marginalized. Ultimately, Brkic maintains that an information-based society cannot function effectively without the bedrock of truth provided by professional journalists. He insists that media organizations must communicate the necessity of truth to their audiences, as society will inevitably struggle without the foundational infrastructure that reliable journalism provides.
