Meta Faces Huge Fine for Child Safety Issues

A legal official in New Mexico has ordered Meta to pay a large penalty of $567 million. This decision follows a lawsuit regarding how social media platforms affect children. The judge described the company as a public nuisance, comparing its negative impact on young users to air pollution. This new payment is in addition to an earlier fine of $375 million, making the total amount nearly one billion dollars for the company.

Meta operates popular services like Facebook and Instagram. Lawyers for the state argued that these platforms expose children to dangerous content and sexual predators. The court discovered that the company used recommendation algorithms to guide young people toward harmful material. These tools automatically choose what a person sees on their screen. Consequently, the judge ruled that Meta must use this money to support behavioral health programs and professional training for teachers.

In addition to the financial penalty, the court required Meta to change how it manages young users. For example, the company must now restrict messaging between adults and minors. It must also limit daily usage for users under 18 and turn off push notifications during school hours and at night. Furthermore, the company must stop showing 'like' counts for younger accounts.

A spokesperson for Meta stated, "We disagree with the ruling and will appeal." The company argues that it works hard to keep platforms safe and remains confident in its safety record. Although this is the first time a social media firm has been labeled a public nuisance, Meta currently faces thousands of similar lawsuits across the United States. A different trial involving many other states will begin in California next week to address concerns about how these digital tools impact child privacy.
