Meta faces large fine for child safety issues

A judge in New Mexico recently ordered Meta to pay 567 million dollars. This fine is because the company failed to warn the public about dangers on its platforms. The judge, Bryan Biedscheid, said that Meta is a public nuisance. He compared the company to a factory that creates pollution. In this case, the pollution is the harm that children experience online. This new fine is the largest one Meta has ever received for child safety. Meta already had to pay 375 million dollars earlier in the same case. Now, the company must pay a total of 942 million dollars. Meta owns popular apps like Instagram and Facebook. A spokesperson for the company said they do not agree with the decision. They plan to appeal the ruling. The company claims they work hard to keep teens safe. They also state that they will defend themselves against these claims. The state of New Mexico started this lawsuit in 2023. Officials argued that Meta endangered children by exposing them to harmful content. The judge found that Meta’s algorithms, which choose what users see, steered children toward bad material. The judge ordered Meta to create a fund with the money. This fund will pay for behavioral health programs for children. It will also provide training for teachers and health professionals. Furthermore, the judge set new rules for the company. Adults cannot message users under 18. Meta must also hide like counts for young users. There is a new limit of 90 hours per month for these users. Also, push notifications will stop during school hours and at night. Meta is currently facing thousands of other lawsuits across the United States regarding similar safety concerns.
